Can Honey Improve Eyesight? Really? [Learn about this Controversial 1-Ingredient Eye Drop]

Can Honey Improve Eyesight?

Honey, a natural source of vitamins and minerals, is known to be an effective folk remedy for improving eyesight and reducing symptoms of short sightedness (myopia) and farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism. In ancient Ayurveda, good old-fashioned honey is even used for curing glaucoma and cataract, and preventing the formation of cataract.

Myopia and hyperopia are caused by weak, inflexible eye muscles which are unable to adjust accurately as vision shifts from far to near, or vice-versa. They are a result of the cornea and lens of the eye incorrectly focusing light entering it. While myopia happens when light is focused in front of the retina, hyperopia occurs when light is wrongly focused behind the retina. In the case of perfect vision, incoming light is correctly focused on the retina.

Honey is rich in protein, vitamin C, niacin and riboflavin which are all helpful in strengthening eye muscular tissues. Zinc, magnesium and iron present in honey also strengthen the optic nerves and improve vision.

DYI – How to Prepare the Honey Eye Drop

Step 1

Prepare 1 teaspoon liquid honey and 1 teaspoon pure distilled water (1:1 honey and water ratio); or 1 teaspoon cream honey and 3 teaspoon of pure distilled water (1:3 honey and water ratio)

Caveat: The suggested mix proportion is only rough guide. Different types of liquid honey have different viscosities. It will be difficult to apply thick cream honey on to the eyes without diluting it with any water.

Depending on how sensitive your eyes are, adjust the amount of water used in the concoction to suit your own individual use.

Unprocessed raw honey is the most ideal as all the live enzymes in it are preserved. Any (distinct) floral varietal or (unidentified) multiflora varietal is fine, but Manuka honey is a cut above the rest in terms of its antibacterial content. Its exceptionally strong antibacterial abilities make a popular choice for eye drop.

Step 2

Mix the honey and water well in small container and transfer the solution into an eye dropper bottle.

Step 3

Apply 2 drops to each eye. Blink several times so that the solution can spread and bathe the whole eye ball.

Note: Standby tissue paper to wipe off the excess liquid that flows down on your face from the eyes. It is recommended that you prepare a fresh batch for the day instead of storing it to last for a few days. The degree of stinging or burning sensation varies for different individuals, and it also depends on the type of honey and amount of water used for diluting.

Step 4

Apply 2-3 times daily, 2-3 times a week.

Can Honey Improve Eyesight? How effective is this home remedy? Do note that honey is not a panacea. It is not a magic formula or guaranteed cure for eye diseases. Some take just 3 to 4 weeks to see an improvement in their vision, some take longer, and some never persist longer to see results.

Because honey contains antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties, the same recipe above is also used as a remedy for dry eyes, conjunctivitis (red eye), itchy eyes, tearing eyes and infected eyes. Awesome, Memo! Thanks for sharing! Hope to hear more good reports from you!

I recently visited a man in Arenas, Costa Rica, who has a live bee museum. He took us around to 16 different varieties of bees, each in their own hives. After the tour we purchased some honey and we were also given a very small bottle of honey for the eyes. I have put it into my eyes, one drop in each eye for three times. It burns at first but then that goes away. Already I notice my vision has more depth of field. I am very impressed and will continue treatment for at least two weeks. Note that I am in my 70s.

I haven’t used the Honey for the eyesight yet, I heard about it.

Mbiganyi, the honey you use may be pure and free from contamination at the start, but once diluted with water, like any food, it is subject to spoilage with time due to bacteria growth and fermentation. As the mixture is going into the eyes, you want to make sure it is as fresh as possible and safe for your eyes.

Wanna ask a question, what will be the effect of using honey solution that is preserved for days and why is it recommended to prepare a fresh solution instead of using the stored one?

Padmini, honey has not been frequently discussed as a possible means of curing short-sightedness but nevertheless it has been suggested, as discussed in this article. Should you decide to give it a try, please let us know if you have any good results!
